PRIME LOCATION
Hotel Convent de la Missió is situated in one of the oldest and quietest parts of the city of the Balearic capital. Surrounded by narrow streets, this Old Town setting means it’s only a short stroll to Las Ramblas and it’s famous flower stalls, Mercado del Olivar the largest covered market on the island with over 100 stalls and Palma’s elegant Council building in Plaça de Cort with it’s ancient olive tree.
Major sights such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, known locally as La Seu, the Almudaina Palace and the Arab baths are only a ten minute walk away.
Tip: Don’t miss the Mercado del Olivar: Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 14:30 and Friday from 14:30 to 20:00.
ART, DECORATION & DESIGN
It was here in this old convent that the Pauline fathers were trained before departing to their missions. Local architect Antoni Esteva has managed a stunning transformation, creating a hotel full of light, art, and secret corners. At the same time there has been total respect for the existing structure as well as the history and legacy of the building.
Today, the crypt is the wellness area, the refectory is the Art bar and the old chapel has morphed into a multipurpose hall for meetings and seminars.
ROOMS & SUITES
There are seven standard rooms, five superior rooms and fifteen suites, eight Junior, six larger Suite Privilège and the enormous Luxury Suite with it’s own steam room and a whirlpool on the terrace. One part of the adjacent first floor is still part of the convent and home to the nun’s, the youngest of whom is now eighty years of age!
The décor is modern and sophisticated with white walls, wooden floors and industrial mesh lighting combining to create a spacious, comfortable and tranquil environment.
The enormous beds are fitted with luxury linen made by Bassols in Barcelona, linen producers since 1790. The bathrooms have deluxe fluffy towels and bathrobes plus all the necessary extras: hairdryer, slippers and luxury bathroom amenities by L’Occitane.
Flat-screen TV’s with digital channels, Wi-Fi, Nespresso coffee machines, air-conditioning and well-stocked minibars are also on hand.
Top Tip: Spoil yourself or significant other, book the Luxury Suite. A 75 square metre elegant and comfortable suite with it’s own steam room and whirlpool on the lovely terrace.
RESTAURANT MARC FOSH
The acclaimed Restaurant Marc Fosh serves tasting menus that highlight the best local produce from across the Balearic Islands. Here the emphasis is on clean flavours and seasonal ingredients with ideas and inspirations coming from around the Mediterranean to create a menu full of originality and creativity.
This restaurant combines Michelin Starred cooking within a modern and contemporary space that offers the possibility to eat inside or alfresco in the delightful, peaceful courtyard setting with it’s vertical garden and water wall.
During the week there is a weekly changing three-course menu served at €29.50, a five-course menu at €39.50 and if you want to really go for it, try the Menú Degustatión at €79.50.
In the evening, there are two different tasting menus to choose from, the Menu Natural at €72. Current dishes include: “All about leeks…Liquid croquette of leeks with leek ash, “noodle” from the roots & leek-lemon puree” and “Salt baked celeriac with a ragout of wild mushrooms, salsify & roasted hay”. The Menu Marc at €89 currently includes “Acquerello rice with lobster, chervil-liquorice chlorophyll & lemongrass Bouillabaisse” and “Wild sea bass with razor clam “pil-pil“, parsnip, pear & chervil”.
A stunning international wine list includes twelve local wines in the selection of sixty nine white wines (from €30 – 680) and a fantastic selection of red wines, including thirty local wines in the selection of ninety reds (from €35 – 880), plus seven rosés and of course a selection of the usual suspects, cavas, champagnes and sweet wines.
Top Tip: Reserve, reserve, reserve; this place gets busy!
In the morning the area is transformed for a breakfast buffet of delicious local meats and cheeses, breads and pastries, cereals and fruit and much more. There is also a hot menu of eggs freshly-cooked to order.
Restaurant Marc Fosh is open for lunch between 13:00 – 15:30 and for dinner between 19:00 – 22:30.
ROOFTOP TERRACE, POOL, GYM & WELLNESS AREA
Up on the rooftop terrace sits the sundeck with loungers and the adjacent splash pool and sundeck. A small gym is also nearby.
Enjoy the sun, take a quick refreshing dip and in the evening watch the sun set over the city of Palma.
If the weather is inclement, drop into the lovely second floor lounge and curl up with a good book. In winter there is the added attraction of a lovely log fire.
Meanwhile down below, housed in the ancient crypt lies the wellness area with an adults only heated jacuzzi pool, water beds, sauna and steam room. The good news is that this is only available on a private booking basis for one hour, so you can enjoy the facilities without other guests being around.
THE ART BAR
Once the refectory of the convent, today it is a bar and artistic multifunctional space housing it’s own cocktail of art. A poem by Jaume Galmés interpreted in large wooden letters dominating the whole of one side by local artist Guillem Nadal, adds poetry to the space. A great place to have that cocktail you have been waiting for!
……….
Hotel Convent de la Missió is a peaceful refuge in the old town of Palma de Mallorca and close to all the sights and sounds.
General Manager Maria Hernández and her team are great hosts and very helpful.
We have absolutely no problem in recommending this carefully renovated and tranquil hotel.
