Spotlight on Mesquida Mora Wines

Established by Bàrbara Mesquida Mora in 2012, Mesquida Mora is a relatively new winery situated on the outskirts of the town of Porreres, some forty kilometres from Palma.

Bàrbara says: “I’m very fortunate I was born in a little paradise. Bathed by the salt water and sun of the Mediterranean, Mallorca is my homeland.

I grew up among vines, barrels and grapes, and the years have led me to believe that there are no coincidences only causalities. We live in sync and nothing happens by accident.”

The Mesquida Mora Winery is made up of seven vineyards spread over some twenty hectares and planted in a rich mosaic of soils, including clay, limestone, and red clay which is rich in iron. The newest vineyard was planted only a couple of years ago whilst the oldest is now over sixty five years old.

Indigenous grape varieties include Callet, Mantonegro, and Premsal which feature strongly alongside some of the older international varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah planted by her father. Around 7500 cases in total are produced each year.

Bàrbara is from the fourth generation of a local wine-making family. Her awareness of the interrelatedness of all things, how each affects the next and how they are ‘in sync’ with one another has a great bearing on how she manages and operates her business. Her great-grandfather had a mixture of vineyards intermingled with apricot trees and thus a field of great biodiversity that also required two harvests.  Today, Bàrbara’s aim is to bequeath rich, fertile soils to future generations.

The management of her vineyards is based on a dialogue with nature: they sow vegetable covers, apply biodynamic compost and preparations as well as use infusions of medicinal plants. All of these techniques help them to achieve grapes of the highest quality in line with the best biodynamic practices.

There are seven wines available in the Mesquida Mora portfolio and they all have two things in common, firstly their lovely labels and secondly their great names: Acrollam (Mallorca spelt backwards), Tripsol (meaning floor), Sotil (meaning the space between two floors) and Sincronia (Synchrony: the magic of life).

The Mesquida Mora Winery maybe relatively new in business terms, the seventh harvest has only just been completed, but Bàrbara’s passion, heritage and of course her wines are all key ingredients in to what makes this small winery very special.
