Where to have lunch in Palma de Mallorca: Gastro Bar at Boutique Hotel Can Cera

Set inside the five-star Boutique Hotel Can Cera, the ‘Gastro Bar’ restaurant is a cool enclave situated in a quiet street in the Old Town, just a short walk from many of Palma’s historic landmarks.

Lunch at Gastro Bar, Boutique Hotel Can Cera : The Review…

Boutique Hotel Can Cera’s Gastro Bar is set in a pretty and quiet courtyard in the Casco Antiguo (Old Town), one of the most interesting parts of the city of Palma de Mallorca, between Plaça Santa Eulàlia and Plaça San Francesc.

It was lovely to return here to try out the new menu at the Gastro Bar and to eat outside in the inviting courtyard beneath the enormous Kentía tree that takes pride of place next to the grand staircase.

Food / Menu

They say: “We prepare food using first rate ingredients, seasonal produce, giving special attention to technique and preparation for an avant-garde presentation”.

The cuisine is Mediterranean-Majorcan and Chef Margarita Bestard’s ‘Starters’ feature a small selection of Tapas, including Handmade ham croquettes, Anchovies from the Cantabrian sea, Patatas bravas, Flatbread of roasted eggplants with romescu and Andalusian style squid with orange ali-oli. There is also a ‘Market Garden’ selection on the menu featuring a Tomato gazpacho, three different salads including the faithful Caesar Salad, a classic in it’s own lunchtime, plus a Burata dish and a Portobello mushroom carpaccio.

We tried the ‘Flatbread of roasted eggplants with romescu, served on black slate’ and the excellent ‘Andalusian style squid with orange ali-oli’ which arrived on  a piece of faux newspaper in English, a perhaps slightly strange presentation choice! Can Cera Lunch CollageThe ‘Main Courses’ feature four meat dishes, Steak tartar with pommes frites, Black Angus burger with fries, Roast shoulder of lamb with provencal style potatoes and a very good Beef sirloin with Majorcan tumbet and cream filled potato. The three fish dishes offer the chance to taste the Creamy rice with prawns and saffron, the beautifully presented Grilled octopus with black eggplants purée, paprika and anis plus a Seabass confit with black olives potato purée and roasted peppers emulsion. There is also one pasta dish of Tagliatelle with basil pesto, pine nuts and Parmesan.

If you have any room left, we just about did, try one of their desserts like a Chocolate coulant with hazelnut ice cream, a Coconut pudding with rum raisins or a Tatin apple pie with vanilla ice cream.

There is a relatively small wine list, 25 wines, with prices starting at 4 € per glass and 22 € for a bottle of the local white wine, Piedra, Papel, Tijera (Stone, Paper, Scissors) and 5 € per glass and 25 € for a bottle of local red wine Angel Negre. Can Cera Lunch CollageWe have always liked Boutique Hotel Can Cera, it’s definitely a stylish option in the Old Town of Palma, the staff are always helpful, attentive and professional. The only thing we didn’t like were the paper napkins!

The new menu includes an interesting selection of tapas as well as some other good starters from 6 €. Apart from the pasta dish, the main courses are all over 20 € and the sweets start at 6 €.

In summer it’s a great place to escape the crowds at lunchtime, relax in a cool environment and enjoy some lovely al fresco dining.
