Meet the Blogger: Katrin Caterina Bury

Katrin Caterina Bury is a blogger living on the Balearic island of Mallorca. Her blog is one of our featured blogs at Mallorca Reflections, so it was only natural to find out a little more about Katrin and her blog, Estilo Palma.

Originally from Berlin, Katrin moved to Mallorca some ten years ago and started her blog, Estilo Palma, as a travel blog in 2014. Katrin started with short stories about places in Palma that she liked – cafés, bars and restaurants, stylish shops, about art, street life and many wonderful people. Today, her blog is a platform to share her passion for Mallorca and its vibrant capital.

Katrin says: “I only write about things I like.”

Mallorca Reflections caught up with Katrin in Palma to ask some questions and find out more, including:

– What do you love most about blogging?

Where is your favourite place to eat?

– What is your top style tip?

Katrin Caterina Bury: The Interview

Could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself, your blog and what motivated you to create it?

My father was a captain, so I have always been close to the sea. I also love traveling and cities. So it came as no surprise that Palma became my second home about ten years ago. Something, many of my friends in Berlin didn’t understand at first. Mallorca? Well, the island is probably one of the most underestimated destinations I know. So I started telling short stories about the many wonderful places I came across. And about the amazing people I met here. That’s how EstiloPalma.com began.

Estilo (Style) features in the name of your blog. How would you describe your own personal style?

My style is rather minimalist. Whether it’s architecture, furniture or fashion, I prefer a plain style like the one of Dieter Rams, the fabulous BRAUN designer Apple products still refer to. On the other hand Palma’s old town is a constant source of inspiration for me.

What is your top style tip?

Whatever you wear – you don’t look good if you don’t feel good.

What is the biggest style lesson you’ve ever learned?

Form follows function.

Food is one of your major blog topics. Where is your favourite place to eat?

That really depends on the situation. During a hike nothing compares to a pamboli in one of the Tramuntana refugis. On a bike trip one of my favorite lunch places is Katarsis, Raul García’s new restaurant near Algaida. When it comes to pintxos it’s Ca La Seu. And for a vegetarian meal I favour Bon Lloc or Plaer Natural.

Describe the single best food experience you’ve ever had on the island.

I’ve had many fabulous food experiences on Mallorca so it would be unfair to mention just one. All the more since there are a couple of extraordinary restaurants with amazing chefs on the island, today. Think of Santi Taura, Joan Marc, Maria Solivellas, Jonay Hernandez, Ariadna Salvador and Pau Navarro. And I love open kitchens, plus a chef who knows how to tell stories about his or her dishes. The most impressive experience recently was a fantastic seasonal menu with a matching play list, and all guests seated at one long table.

How would you describe your site to new readers?

Estilo Palma tells personal stories about favourite places and wonderful people in Palma and on Mallorca. About restaurants and cafés, about stylish shops, art, street life and nature worth do discover.

What do you love most about blogging? And how many times a week do you post?

The fun part is to find a catchy headline. I often play with song and movie titles or rephrase popular stuff. For example I coined “Johnny Water” as the title for my article about Can Joan de S’Aigo. The feedback I get for my blog posts – both from readers and from people I have been writing about – is very motivating. And often leads to a new subject. Usually I publish at least one article per week.

Are your blog posts impromptu or does a certain amount of planning go into them?

I always work with an editorial calendar in order to maintain a good mix of food, style, art, people and outdoors. Also I try to capture seasonal aspects and topical events. One of the biggest advantages of an internet magazine though is the possibility to change plan. So if I stumble upon a new store, a stunning exhibition or a culinary revelation I am happy to share it with my readers, right away.

Do you promote your blog? How important is traffic to you?

I mainly use Flipboard and Instagram but also Facebook and Twitter to broaden the respective audience for a blog post, in particular in the case of sponsored posts. But here again – I only write about things I like. And I am lucky that more than often Estilo Palma is a source of inspiration for other media. Whether they get an idea for an article or use my post as a signature piece. Discovering quotes from my blog always make me smile – even more so, if they are credited with Estilo Palma. Let me take the opportunity to say thank you, Adrian, for your enthusiastic work for Mallorca Reflections, and for your steady support of Estilo Palma.
